DR MIKE EPWORTH
> JIMMY POSSUM CHAIRS

Masterclasses Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 1pm-2pm
MVPAC

As a self-identified contemporary bodger, Dr. Mike Epworth’s practice lies at a significant intersection between critical elements of Australian history, cultural memory and woodcraft.

Michael’s practice models and advocates for increased dialogue between sculpture, craft, archaeology and historiography while demonstrating a rigorous consideration of issues of colonisation, labour, production, ecology and community.

Mike and collaborating research partner, sculpture, maker and documenter Bronwyn Harm, make up Bodja Design. Together they have spent the past seven years investigated the Meander Valley’s 150 year living Jimmy Possum chairmaking tradition. This research outcomed in the critically acclaimed QVMAG survey exhibition ‘An Unbroken Tradition’. Mike and Bronwyn will be presenting four historical Jimmy Possum chairs as well as showcasing their contemporary Jimmy Possum chairs and chairmaking workshops at the TCF.  Mike will be giving a series of lectures over the four days that will outline his research and the contemporary implications and applications of this hyper-local material cultural tradition.
